FAQs

FAQs about Grief & Loss

Find the perfect specialist who gets you—and your needs—better than your favorite barista gets your coffee order.

How do I deal with my loved one's addiction?

Dealing with someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol can be difficult. It is important to remember that addiction is a disease, and the addict is not responsible for their behavior. You can offer support and understanding, but it is important to set boundaries. You can also get help for yourself through therapy or counseling.

Why is it important to address grief?

Addressing grief is crucial because unresolved grief can significantly impact your quality of life, overall well-being, and ability to function in daily activities. Left unaddressed, grief can lead to more severe mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and complicated grief.

What can happen if I don't seek help for my grief?

Ignoring grief can exacerbate symptoms and make it more challenging to manage over time. This can result in a negative impact on your personal, professional, and social life, leading to feelings of isolation, chronic sadness, and even physical health complications.

How long does grief counseling typically take?

The duration of grief counseling varies for each individual, depending on the severity of their grief and their progress in therapy. Our therapists will regularly assess your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

What type of grief counseling is available in Colorado Springs?

We offer a variety of specialized services, including individual therapy, group therapy, and various therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic therapy.

Is there any support for family members affected by a loved one's death?

Yes, we provide supportive counseling for family members who are struggling with the loss of a loved one. Our compassionate therapists can help you gain insight into your feelings and provide constructive strategies to cope with the pain of bereavement.

How can I tell if I need grief counseling?

If you find yourself having difficulty managing daily activities due to lingering feelings associated with grief such as sadness, anger, guilt or numbness; then it might be beneficial for you to seek professional help through our Colorado Springs Grief Counseling services. Our therapists are trained in helping clients identify their needs and goals related to grieving.

Do I have to talk about my loss during grief counseling sessions?

It is not mandatory that all conversations revolve around the issue causing your grief but our therapists will provide guidance on how best to process the situation. You are in control of how much or little you want to share in a session, but it is important to stay open and honest with your therapist for optimal results.

What are the stages of grief?

The stages of grief, according to the Kübler-Ross model, include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. However, it's important to note that not everyone will experience all these stages, or in this order. Grief is a highly individual process.

Why is grief worse at night?

Grief may feel worse at night because sleep disturbances are common during the grieving process. As nighttime falls, distractions diminish and we're left alone with our thoughts, which can make the loss feel overwhelming.

Across hundreds of client reviews, one theme comes through again and again: people feel truly heard here. Clients describe finally finding a therapist who understood them, gaining real tools for anxiety, trauma, and anger management, and walking away from sessions feeling lighter and more hopeful. Many say Overcomers was the first place therapy actually felt like the right fit — a space to be met with warmth, patience, and genuine care on the path to becoming who they're meant to be.

The staff is super awesome. It’s a breath of fresh air being able to get the weight off of my chest. 5/5 10/10 whatever the scale. I never realized how much it would help. Wish I would’ve done it sooner! Better late than never !

I have been through some very extreme trauma, and I've also done so much research and done so much work on my own. As a very self aware patient, it's insanely difficult to find a good fit for a therapist. Sometimes you just need to find someone who thinks outside of the box. Someone who makes you see a different perspective. I found this in Stefanie Kerr. She the most wonderful therapist I have ever met, and I've met A LOT! She encourages you to see yourself as just a normal human. You get stuck in this mindset that you aren't normal and get used to the label of being a broken person and she somehow makes you feel like you were never actually broken at all, you were just using your toolbox all wrong. She gives you the guidance to use what you found that works for you and makes it better! She smashes toxic coping mechanisms and helps you turn them into beneficial ones. She not only improved my life but my relationship with emotions in general. Along the way therapy with her has even helped my marriage!! Not only has my spouse seen a huge change in me, but my peers have pointed out how absolutely zen I am compared to how emotionally dysregulated I used to be. The way she changes your relationship with emotions is absolutely magical and I will recommend her to everyone I know until I die. She is an absolute blessing to the therapy world.
