Can a counselor help me with my relationships after sexual abuse?

Sexual abuse can make it difficult to trust others and feel safe in relationships. It can feel like you're trying to build a new connection on a shaky foundation. Counseling provides a safe, supportive space for you to explore your feelings and build new ways of relating to others. We'll help you understand what's triggering your fear and give you the tools to build a sense of safety and trust. Through evidence-based therapy, clients can learn coping strategies for managing triggers, improving communication, setting healthy boundaries, and strengthening relationships. We believe you have the power to create a new, rewarding life.

Is it my fault that I was a victim of sexual abuse?

One of the most painful parts of being a victim of sexual abuse is the burden of blame, but we want you to know with certainty: it is never your fault. An abuser’s actions are a reflection of their own issues, not a reflection of your worth. Counseling provides a space where you can gently put down that heavy weight of guilt and shame. We’ll help you understand the dynamics of abuse so you can rebuild your sense of self and remember that you are worthy of love and respect. Many survivors of sexual abuse struggle with self-blame after traumatic experiences. A sexual abuse counselor can help challenge those harmful beliefs and replace them with a healthier understanding of what happened.

How do I begin to heal from the trauma of sexual abuse?

Healing from trauma can feel like trying to fix a broken bone without a cast—it’s difficult and painful without the right support. We want to be your support. The healing process begins with understanding that what you experienced was not normal and that your feelings are valid. We'll work with you to process the past trauma and find new ways to cope with the stress and fear. People who have been sexually abused often experience a range of emotional responses, including anxiety, depression, shame, anger, or difficulty trusting others. Healing starts with recognizing that these reactions are common responses to trauma and that recovery is possible. You can build a new life for yourself, and we are here to help you every step of the way.

What is the goal of counseling for victims of sexual abuse?

When you’ve been living in an abusive situation, it can feel like you are walking on eggshells. Counseling is a safe space where you can let your guard down and begin to trust again. We’ll help you process the trauma, rebuild your self- worth, and find your footing on a path that is entirely your own. Sexual abuse counseling focuses on helping individuals recover from traumatic experiences while building resilience, confidence, and emotional well-being. Across hundreds of client reviews, one theme comes through again and again: people feel truly heard here. Clients describe finally finding a therapist who understood them, gaining real tools for anxiety, trauma, and anger management, and walking away from sessions feeling lighter and more hopeful. Many say Overcomers was the first place therapy actually felt like the right fit — a space to be met with warmth, patience, and genuine care on the path to becoming who they're meant to be.

I really appreciate how she helped me with my anger management, anxiety, she helped me with my issues with my dad, etc. I really appreciate everything that she did for me and she opened my eyes to realize that there is so much more to life than what you can see with your bare eyes.

The staff is super awesome. It’s a breath of fresh air being able to get the weight off of my chest. 5/5 10/10 whatever the scale. I never realized how much it would help. Wish I would’ve done it sooner! Better late than never !

I have been through some very extreme trauma, and I've also done so much research and done so much work on my own. As a very self aware patient, it's insanely difficult to find a good fit for a therapist. Sometimes you just need to find someone who thinks outside of the box. Someone who makes you see a different perspective. I found this in Stefanie Kerr. She the most wonderful therapist I have ever met, and I've met A LOT! She encourages you to see yourself as just a normal human. You get stuck in this mindset that you aren't normal and get used to the label of being a broken person and she somehow makes you feel like you were never actually broken at all, you were just using your toolbox all wrong. She gives you the guidance to use what you found that works for you and makes it better! She smashes toxic coping mechanisms and helps you turn them into beneficial ones. She not only improved my life but my relationship with emotions in general. Along the way therapy with her has even helped my marriage!! Not only has my spouse seen a huge change in me, but my peers have pointed out how absolutely zen I am compared to how emotionally dysregulated I used to be. The way she changes your relationship with emotions is absolutely magical and I will recommend her to everyone I know until I die. She is an absolute blessing to the therapy world.
