Hoarding Counseling in Colorado

Rooms you can't use anymore. Piles that keep growing no matter how many times you try to tackle them. The frustration of loved ones who don't understand why letting go feels impossible. If hoarding is affecting your home or your relationships, you shouldn't have to sort through it alone. Overcomers Counseling offers hoarding-focused therapy across Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, and Pueblo, plus statewide teletherapy.

You Don't Have to Face This Alone

Hoarding is often misunderstood as laziness or a lack of discipline, but it's actually a recognized mental health condition tied to anxiety, decision-making, and attachment to belongings. The shame that comes with it can make it even harder to ask for help. Our therapists approach hoarding with compassion, not judgment, understanding that the clutter is often a symptom of something deeper.

Signs Hoarding May Need Support

Common signs include difficulty discarding items regardless of value, significant distress at the thought of getting rid of things, living spaces that have become unusable, and strain on relationships with family or housemates because of the clutter. Many people also experience embarrassment that keeps them from inviting others into their home.

How Our Therapists Help

Our providers use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) specifically adapted for hoarding, helping you explore the thoughts and feelings behind saving behaviors, build decision-making skills, and gradually work toward a home that feels manageable again. This is often slow, steady work, and our therapists move at a pace that respects how difficult this can be.

How can I support a loved one with a hoarding disorder?

Supporting a loved one with a hoarding disorder can be a difficult and frustrating journey, but you are not alone. The best thing you can do is to be a supportive partner, not a demanding one. We can provide you with tools and guidance to help you express your concerns without judgment. We’ll also help you understand the complexities of hoarding so you can be a supportive and encouraging presence in their life. You can make a difference.

Why do people hoard things?

Hoarding is often a way to cope with deep-seated emotions, like a safety blanket that has become a suffocating weight. People often hoard as a way to manage feelings of loss, anxiety, or trauma. The items they collect can serve as a way to feel in control, or to hold onto a memory. We understand this struggle, and we'll provide a safe space for you to explore the "why" behind your behavior. We believe you can find healthier ways to cope with your emotions.

Can a counselor really help with hoarding?

Yes! Hoarding is a deeply complex issue, but it is treatable. Counseling is a powerful tool to help you get to the root of your struggles and find a new way forward. We’ll help you understand your unique challenges, and we’ll give you a toolkit of strategies to help you let go of the things you no longer need. We believe that you have the power to change and to live a life that feels more organized and peaceful.

What is the goal of counseling for hoarding?

The goal of counseling for hoarding isn’t just about clearing a cluttered room; it’s about creating space in your life for peace and connection. Hoarding is not a choice; it's a deeply complex issue that often stems from a fear of letting go. We work together to help you understand the "why" behind your behavior, so you can begin to make empowered choices. You can reclaim your home and your life, and we are here to help you every step of the way.

Across hundreds of client reviews, one theme comes through again and again: people feel truly heard here. Clients describe finally finding a therapist who understood them, gaining real tools for anxiety, trauma, and anger management, and walking away from sessions feeling lighter and more hopeful. Many say Overcomers was the first place therapy actually felt like the right fit — a space to be met with warmth, patience, and genuine care on the path to becoming who they're meant to be.

Emily Ladd, LSW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Its difficult to put into words the amount of help Emily has provided me without crying. When I first started this journey like most men I was skeptical at best. And had failed every time I attempted counseling. I knew I needed help but I didn’t know what I needed, thru this first 90 days not only have I felt heard but have worked thru EDM exercises, and have been able to put a name to a lot of the issues I’m facing while also understand you don’t have to be broken forever. She has been extremely patient with me, but also very good at challenging me at the same time. She has given me great resources that fit my life style (I’m not sitting down reading a book but I will listen to a podcast while I’m driving) she truly has been a blessing to not only me but also my children as my relationship is improving with them as well.
