Behavioral Counseling in Colorado

Constant meltdowns. Escalating conflict at home or school. Behaviors that leave you feeling like you've run out of tools to try. Parenting or caring for a child with behavioral challenges is exhausting, and you shouldn't have to figure it out alone. Overcomers Counseling offers behavioral counseling for kids, teens, and families across Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, and Pueblo, plus statewide teletherapy.

You Don't Have to Manage This Alone

Behavior is often a form of communication — a child expressing something they don't yet have the words or skills for, whether that's big emotions, unmet needs, or difficulty regulating. That understanding doesn't make the day-to-day any less draining. Our therapists work with both kids and families to build lasting change together.

Common Behavioral Challenges We Support

Families come to counseling for help with tantrums or meltdowns, defiance or aggression, difficulty following rules or routines, emotional outbursts, and behaviors affecting school or family life. Whatever's showing up, our therapists help identify what's underneath it.

How Our Therapists Help

Our providers use evidence-based approaches like Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to build emotional regulation skills, consistent structure, and stronger communication between parent and child. For clients who want it, we also offer faith-integrated counseling grounded in grace and consistency.

Can behavioral counseling help with my habits?

We all have habits we’d like to break, whether it's scrolling endlessly on your phone or procrastinating on important tasks. It can feel like your brain is on autopilot, and you're just along for the ride. Behavioral counseling is all about helping you take control of that autopilot. We’ll help you understand the triggers behind your habits and replace them with healthier routines that support your goals. You are not a helpless observer in your own life; you can learn to steer your own ship.

What is the difference between behavioral therapy and talk therapy?

Think of behavioral therapy as the "how-to" guide for your life, while traditional talk therapy is more like a journal. Both are incredibly valuable, but they have different purposes. Talk therapy often focuses on exploring your past and gaining insight into your emotions. Behavioral therapy, on the other hand, is action-oriented and focuses on the present. We'll work on practical skills to change specific behaviors and patterns that are causing problems. We believe in your ability to learn and change, and we’ll give you the roadmap to do it.

What is the goal of behavioral counseling?

The goal of behavioral counseling is simple yet powerful: to give you the tools to take control of your life. It's about shifting from being a passenger to a driver. We’ll help you understand how your thoughts and feelings influence your actions, so you can make intentional choices that lead to positive change. Whether you want to overcome procrastination, manage your anger, or improve your relationships, we're here to help you get unstuck and build a life that feels authentic and rewarding.

How does behavioral counseling work?

Imagine your life as a GPS. Sometimes, you have a destination in mind, but old, unhelpful habits keep sending you down the same wrong roads. Behavioral counseling is all about reprogramming that GPS. We work together to identify the specific behaviors holding you back and then develop new, healthier strategies to get you to your goal. It’s not about endless talk; it's about learning a new set of skills, testing them out, and taking action to create the life you want.

Are free programs for troubled youth effective for long-term change?

Yes, free programs for troubled youth can be highly effective, especially when they address both mental health issues and environmental stressors. Many community-based treatment programs focus on therapy, skill-building, and family involvement to support lasting growth. When combined with consistent family support and follow-up care, these resources for troubled youth can create meaningful, long-term positive outcomes.

What are the signs that my child may need a program for troubled teens?

Some signs that a troubled teenager may need additional support include persistent behavioral changes, withdrawal from family members, declining school performance, substance use, frequent emotional outbursts, or signs of anxiety and depression. If your child is struggling with ongoing mental health problems or risky behaviors, programs for troubled teens can provide structure, guidance, and professional support tailored to their needs.

How can I help my child persist when things get tough?

Help your child by providing support and guidance, using positive language, highlighting the progress they have made, breaking down the challenge into smaller steps, and motivating them with positive affirmations.

Across hundreds of client reviews, one theme comes through again and again: people feel truly heard here. Clients describe finally finding a therapist who understood them, gaining real tools for anxiety, trauma, and anger management, and walking away from sessions feeling lighter and more hopeful. Many say Overcomers was the first place therapy actually felt like the right fit — a space to be met with warmth, patience, and genuine care on the path to becoming who they're meant to be.

I really appreciate how she helped me with my anger management, anxiety, she helped me with my issues with my dad, etc. I really appreciate everything that she did for me and she opened my eyes to realize that there is so much more to life than what you can see with your bare eyes.

The staff is super awesome. It’s a breath of fresh air being able to get the weight off of my chest. 5/5 10/10 whatever the scale. I never realized how much it would help. Wish I would’ve done it sooner! Better late than never !

I have been through some very extreme trauma, and I've also done so much research and done so much work on my own. As a very self aware patient, it's insanely difficult to find a good fit for a therapist. Sometimes you just need to find someone who thinks outside of the box. Someone who makes you see a different perspective. I found this in Stefanie Kerr. She the most wonderful therapist I have ever met, and I've met A LOT! She encourages you to see yourself as just a normal human. You get stuck in this mindset that you aren't normal and get used to the label of being a broken person and she somehow makes you feel like you were never actually broken at all, you were just using your toolbox all wrong. She gives you the guidance to use what you found that works for you and makes it better! She smashes toxic coping mechanisms and helps you turn them into beneficial ones. She not only improved my life but my relationship with emotions in general. Along the way therapy with her has even helped my marriage!! Not only has my spouse seen a huge change in me, but my peers have pointed out how absolutely zen I am compared to how emotionally dysregulated I used to be. The way she changes your relationship with emotions is absolutely magical and I will recommend her to everyone I know until I die. She is an absolute blessing to the therapy world.
