Adoption Counseling in Colorado

Whether you're an adoptee processing questions about identity and belonging, a birth parent navigating grief and complicated emotions, or an adoptive parent working through the unique challenges of building your family, you shouldn't have to sort through it alone. Overcomers Counseling offers adoption-informed therapy across Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, and Pueblo, plus statewide teletherapy.

You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone

Adoption touches every member of the triad differently, and each experience deserves its own space to be heard. Adoptees may wrestle with questions of identity, loss, or where they belong, even within loving families. Birth parents often carry grief that doesn't always fit neatly into how others expect them to feel. Adoptive parents may face the pressure of bonding, attachment struggles, or the added complexity of trauma-informed parenting. Whatever your role in the adoption story, our therapists are here to walk with you through it.

Common Challenges Adoption Counseling Can Support

People come to adoption counseling for many reasons: helping a child process grief or identity questions, supporting attachment and bonding in a new family, working through birth parent relationships or open adoption dynamics, or simply having a space to talk through emotions that friends and family may not fully understand. There's no wrong reason to reach out.

What is the purpose of adoption counseling?

Adoption is a beautiful journey, but it's also a complex one, filled with twists and turns. Think of adoption counseling as your trusted co-pilot. It’s a supportive space where all members of the adoption triad—birth parents, adoptive parents, and the adopted child—can find a clear path forward. We help you navigate the tricky emotions, unexpected questions, and legal maze, so you can build a strong, loving foundation for your new family. You are not alone in this journey, and we're here to help you every step of the way.

What are common emotional challenges in adoption?

Navigating the emotions of adoption can sometimes feel like trying to untangle a giant ball of yarn—confusing and overwhelming at first. Birth parents may grapple with grief and loss, while adoptive parents might deal with feelings of inadequacy or worry about bonding. And for the child, it's a journey of identity, often with questions of belonging. We understand these feelings are real and valid. We can work together to unravel these emotions, validate your experience, and give you the tools to create a safe, open space to talk about them.

Is adoption counseling required for birth parents?

While it isn't always a legal requirement, think of adoption counseling for birth parents like a crucial and caring compass. It ensures you have a safe, non-judgmental space to explore all of your options and feel confident in your decision. It’s also a vital resource for processing the profound emotions that come with placing a child. We believe in your capacity to make a thoughtful choice, and counseling is a supportive way to ensure you have the care and guidance needed before, during, and after this life-changing decision.

How does counseling help with attachment and bonding?

Creating a strong bond with an adopted child is like building a trusting bridge. Sometimes, there might be missing pieces or past experiences that make the process feel difficult. Counseling helps you find the right tools and techniques to construct that bridge. We work together to understand your child's unique needs, offering strategies that promote secure attachment and a sense of safety. With patience and the right support, you can build a beautiful, lasting connection where your child feels completely seen and deeply loved.

Dr. Roncalli is such a huge support and help for me. She is brilliant, and very quickly added insight, developed applicable life skills, and is a grounding presence. Overcomers practice is clean, safe, and the atmosphere is calming. I'm thankful I met her when I did.

The staff is super awesome. It’s a breath of fresh air being able to get the weight off of my chest. 5/5 10/10 whatever the scale. I never realized how much it would help. Wish I would’ve done it sooner! Better late than never !

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have been through some very extreme trauma, and I've also done so much research and done so much work on my own. As a very self aware patient, it's insanely difficult to find a good fit for a therapist. Sometimes you just need to find someone who thinks outside of the box. Someone who makes you see a different perspective. I found this in Stefanie Kerr. She the most wonderful therapist I have ever met, and I've met A LOT! She encourages you to see yourself as just a normal human. You get stuck in this mindset that you aren't normal and get used to the label of being a broken person and she somehow makes you feel like you were never actually broken at all, you were just using your toolbox all wrong. She gives you the guidance to use what you found that works for you and makes it better! She smashes toxic coping mechanisms and helps you turn them into beneficial ones. She not only improved my life but my relationship with emotions in general. Along the way therapy with her has even helped my marriage!! Not only has my spouse seen a huge change in me, but my peers have pointed out how absolutely zen I am compared to how emotionally dysregulated I used to be. The way she changes your relationship with emotions is absolutely magical and I will recommend her to everyone I know until I die. She is an absolute blessing to the therapy world.
