Autism Counseling in Colorado

Navigating sensory sensitivities, social communication, or the exhaustion of masking to fit in can be draining — for autistic individuals and the families who love them. You shouldn't have to figure it out alone. Overcomers Counseling offers autism-informed counseling across Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, and Pueblo, plus statewide teletherapy.

You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone

Autism affects every person differently, and support should reflect that. Whether you're an autistic adult processing a new or late diagnosis, a parent supporting an autistic child, or navigating the challenges of daily life, communication, or sensory needs, our therapists provide care that's individualized, never one-size-fits-all.

What Counseling Can Support

Sessions often focus on building emotional regulation and coping skills, navigating social communication and relationships, addressing anxiety or sensory overwhelm, supporting families and caregivers, and processing the emotional impact of a late diagnosis. Every plan is shaped around the individual's specific strengths and needs.

How Our Therapists Help

Our providers adapt evidence-based approaches to be accessible and affirming, respecting neurodivergent communication styles and avoiding a purely deficit-based lens. We also work closely with families to build understanding and effective support at home. For clients who want it, we offer faith-integrated counseling grounded in acceptance.

Does Overcomers offer Autism evaluations?

No, we provide counseling (talk therapy) and medication management for individuals with Autism or those who may have Autism. However, if you require a formal evaluation involving comprehensive testing, we recommend consulting a Psychologist.

What is the goal of autism counseling?

The goal of autism counseling isn't to change who you are. That would be like trying to rewrite a book that’s already a bestseller. Instead, it’s about giving you the tools to thrive in a world that isn't always set up for how your brain works. We’ll help you understand your unique strengths, navigate social interactions that feel confusing, and build strategies to manage sensory overwhelm. You are not alone in this, and we're here to help you live a life that feels authentic and fulfilling to you.

Can counseling help an autistic person with social skills?

Navigating social situations can sometimes feel like trying to play a video game without a user manual. You might know what you’re supposed to do, but the unspoken rules can be confusing. Counseling provides a safe space to get that manual. We can work together to break down social cues, practice conversational skills, and help you feel more confident in different settings. We believe in your capacity to connect with others on your own terms and build friendships that truly matter to you.

What are some ways to manage sensory overload?

Sensory overload can feel like your brain is a computer with too many tabs open at once, freezing from the overwhelming input. It’s not just a minor annoyance; it can be incredibly distressing. In counseling, we can help you learn to hit "refresh" and find your calm. This might involve identifying your specific triggers, creating a personalized sensory toolkit with things that soothe you, or developing a clear strategy for when you feel overwhelmed. You have the power to control your environment and reclaim your peace.

How does counseling help with emotional regulation?

Sometimes, emotions can feel like a tidal wave—sudden, powerful, and completely out of your control. For autistic individuals, understanding and expressing emotions can be especially challenging, as the internal experience doesn't always match the external expression. Counseling gives you the space to understand your feelings without judgment. We’ll help you identify the "why" behind your emotions and give you practical tools to manage them, so you can ride the wave instead of being swept away by it.

Miranda Puente, LSW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I feel like she listens to everything I have to say in a non-judgemental way. She remains nuetral and provide valid information as necessary and doesnt feed into my delusions, yet help me escape them step by step. When we are speaking i feel she is very attentive and engage in the conversation(s) at hand. I enjoy how relatable she can be on difficult topics. All I have to say about Miranda is GOAT.
