Chronic Impulsivity Counseling in Colorado

Acting before thinking it through. Spending, saying, or doing things you regret almost immediately. Feeling like your decisions happen faster than you can control them. If impulsivity keeps creating problems in your life, you shouldn't have to keep cleaning up the aftermath alone. Overcomers Counseling offers support across Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, and Pueblo, plus statewide teletherapy.

You Don't Have to Untangle This Alone

Chronic impulsivity can show up in spending, relationships, substance use, anger, or everyday decisions, and it often comes with a cycle of regret and self-criticism that's exhausting to live with. It's not about willpower — impulse control is a skill that can be built with the right support, and you don't have to figure it out through trial and error on your own.

Recognizing Chronic Impulsivity

Common signs include acting on urges without considering consequences, difficulty pausing before reacting emotionally, impulsive spending or decision-making, trouble sticking to plans or commitments, and a pattern of regret after acting quickly. Impulsivity can also be connected to conditions like ADHD, bipolar disorder, or anxiety, which our therapists can help you explore.

How Our Therapists Help

Our providers use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and skills-based approaches like distress tolerance and mindfulness to help you build a pause between urge and action. We'll also explore what's driving the impulsivity, whether that's an underlying condition, stress, or learned coping patterns, and coordinate with our psychiatry team when medication support may help.

FAQs about Chronic Impulsivity

What is the goal of counseling for chronic impulsivity?

Living with chronic impulsivity can feel like your brain has no "stop" button. It’s that voice that tells you to buy something you don’t need or say something you immediately regret. The goal of counseling isn't to silence that voice completely, but to teach you how to hit the pause button. We work together to help you build a mental filter, so you can make intentional choices instead of acting on a whim. We believe you have the power to take control of your actions and, in turn, your life.

How can I stop myself from making impulsive decisions?

Stopping impulsive decisions can feel like a constant battle between your brain and your actions. Counseling gives you the strategies to win that war. We'll help you recognize the "red flags" before you act, so you can pause and consider the consequences. We can also help you develop healthy coping mechanisms to manage the underlying feelings—like anxiety or boredom—that often trigger impulsive actions. We can work together to help you think before you act.

Can therapy really help with chronic impulsivity?

Therapy is one of the most effective tools for managing chronic impulsivity. Think of it as a workout for your brain. By learning techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), you'll train your mind to be more disciplined. With consistent practice, you'll feel stronger in resisting urges and making more thoughtful decisions. You can change your behavior and we are here to provide the tools, support and encouragement to empower you to live your best life.

What are some common challenges in managing impulsivity?

Managing impulsivity can sometimes feel like trying to catch a runaway train. It’s incredibly difficult. One of the biggest challenges is the instant gratification that comes from impulsive actions. You may feel a temporary high, only to be left with regret later. Another major challenge is that impulsive behavior can be a way of avoiding difficult emotions. We understand that this is a struggle. We’ll work with you to find healthier ways to cope with these emotions, so you can be in charge of your decisions.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have been through some very extreme trauma, and I've also done so much research and done so much work on my own. As a very self aware patient, it's insanely difficult to find a good fit for a therapist. Sometimes you just need to find someone who thinks outside of the box. Someone who makes you see a different perspective. I found this in Stefanie Kerr. She the most wonderful therapist I have ever met, and I've met A LOT! She encourages you to see yourself as just a normal human. You get stuck in this mindset that you aren't normal and get used to the label of being a broken person and she somehow makes you feel like you were never actually broken at all, you were just using your toolbox all wrong. She gives you the guidance to use what you found that works for you and makes it better! She smashes toxic coping mechanisms and helps you turn them into beneficial ones. She not only improved my life but my relationship with emotions in general. Along the way therapy with her has even helped my marriage!! Not only has my spouse seen a huge change in me, but my peers have pointed out how absolutely zen I am compared to how emotionally dysregulated I used to be. The way she changes your relationship with emotions is absolutely magical and I will recommend her to everyone I know until I die. She is an absolute blessing to the therapy world.
