Billing the Service Code T1017

T1017 is for targeted case management (8-15 minutes per unit).  T1017 is for Medicaid Clients Only.  A Consultation Note requires you to add a “Consultation” appointment to your TN calendar for the day and time the consultation occurred.

How to create an appointment using T1017

  • Click on the blue + sign on your TN calendar and change the appointment Type to Consultation (see below).
  • Then, choose the client for whom the consultation will be conducted, and be sure the date and time are accurate.
  • You can adjust the duration of the meeting to whatever is appropriate.
  • Save the appointment.
  • This code is billed per 15-minute unit.  Adjust the number of units based on your time performing this service.
  • The actual time requirement is 8-15 minutes per unit.
  • You can also ‘bundle’ your time doing case management of the course of the month to gain enough minutes to bill.  Write a contact note for each contact exchange.  For example:
    • On 1/1/22 called PCP and left a message - 2 minutes - write a contact note
    • On 1/5/22 received VM from PCP and called back - 5 minutes - write contact note
    • On 1/15/22 contacted PCP again and spoke to the nurse - 4 minutes - write a contact note
    • You can write a consultation note, billing T1017, stating you spent 11 minutes contacting PCP.

Then, after the consultation occurs, write the consultation note.  Be sure that your consultation note includes the “Minimum Documentation Requirements.”  T1017 Consultation Note
